Technology:
Creates biochar from landfill waste. Waste is robotically separated to optimize feedstock. Biochar is then milled to about 10 µm for compatibility with cement.
Benefits:
Reduces carbon emissions, enhances concrete compressive strength, durability and workability, and sequesters CO2. 30% replacement of OPC yields zero carbon emissions (includes emissions from pyrolysis and other energy used?). Can replace up to 50% to sequester more carbon.
Possible disadvantages:
CAPEX for robotics separator at multiple landfills. Competing uses for biochar. Concrete product is dark.
Status:
2026 finalizing a draft EPD.
TRL estimated at 7.
Production:
250 Mt/yr planned for early 2026. 40,000 Mt/yr is goal for 2026.
