Technology:
Creates biochar from landfill waste. Waste is robotically separated to optimize feedstock. Biochar is then milled to about 10 µm for compatibility with cement.
Benefits:
Reduces carbon emissions, enhances concrete compressive strength, durability and workability, and sequesters CO2. 30% replacement of OPC yields zero carbon emissions (includes emissions from pyrolysis and other energy used?). Can replace up to 50% to sequester more carbon.
Possible disadvantages:
CAPEX for robotics separator at multiple landfills. Quantities of biomass feedstock used (global biochar produced in 2023 was 350,000 tonnes). Competing uses for biochar. Concrete product is dark. Mix design and quality control for 30% replacement of OPC. Cost of biochar.

2026 finalizing a draft EPD.
