Location:
Golden, Colorado
Products:
SCM - OPUS SCM (Trade Marked)
Cement - OPUS ZERO (Trade Marked) - under testing 2025
Technology:
Works with silicate-based raw materials such as granites and basalts, sands and gravels, and clays. Ideally close to an aggregate mine. Feedstocks are fed into a reactor where it is milled and vitrified into a glassy powder.
Benefits:
OPUS SCM used as a binder emits 277 MtCO2/Mt vs 922 MtCO2/Mt for OPC, and can be used to replace up to 40% of OPC - this equates to a 28% reduction vs OPC. OPUS ZERO is designed as a cement alternative to OPC - this would equate to a 70% reduction in carbon emissions.
Possible disadvantages:
CAPEX and time of construction for Advanced Processing Facility (APF) required. Locations limited to suit feedstock requirements.
Status:
First APF under construction in Cleburne, Texas as of December 10, 2025. Estimated cost $125 million. Estimated construction time 18 months. Production capacity 240,000 Mt/yr. CO2 emission reduction capacity 154,800 Mt or 0.1548 Gt/year. U.S. concrete emissions are about 88.5 MMt or 88.5 Gt/year.
TRL estimated at 8.
Production:
Two pilot plants, one in Vancouver and one in Golden - estimated combined production capacity of 20,000 Mt/year. 240,000 Mt/year plant scheduled to come on line in 2027.
