FORTERA SCM

Company:

Fortera

Location:

San Jose, California

Products:

SCM - ReAct (Trade Marked) - binary and tertiary blends

Cement - ReAct (Trade Marked) - under testing 2025

Technology:

Utilizes a polymorph of limestone known as Vaterite.  CO2 from standard kiln exhausts piped into reactors and chemically bonded with a form of "reactive carbonates" (proprietary) and then further processed into ReAct products.  Almost doubles the amount of cement made from limestone.

Benefits:

ReAct as a binary blend reduces carbon emissions by 10 % (vs OPC), by 40% as a teriary blend, and by 70% when used as the cement (no OPC).  Processing components can be attached to an existing cement plant.
Meets ASTM C1157 for all six categories, the performance specification for hydraulic cement.

Vaterite used can be made into a lightweight aggregate and a fiber cement board.

Possible disadvantages:

Only available at cement plants that have added the Fortera facility to their plants.  Scalability impacted by CAPEX to add processing equipment.

Status:

It costs about $150 - 200 million to install Fortera at an existing cement plant.  Starting work on a commercial scale plant for Microsoft 2025.

TRL estimated at 8.

Production:

15,000 metric ton/year plant in Redding, California.  2023 Fortera signed an agreement with Microsoft for a plant with 400,000 Mt/yr capacity (9/25/2025).
